Its been more than 6 years since the ATF has been led by a permanent, Senate-confirmed Director and we cannot allow the only federal agency tasked with enforcing gun laws to lack leadership — especially at a time when our nation’s gun violence epidemic rages.
President Biden recently nominated gun safety expert David Chipman to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the federal agency charged with enforcing gun laws and overseeing the gun industry. A 25-year retired ATF agent, Chipman is vastly qualified for this role and will prioritize our safety from gun violence. But right now, the U.S. Senate confirmation vote is looming, and the Senate is leaning against supporting Mr. Chipman's nomination.
