Brady California Celebrates Supreme Court Declining to Hear Challenge to Ban on Gun Sales on State Property

Brady California activists, including former Brady Board Member Ira Sharp, had helped pass the landmark legislation that made California the first state in the country to ban gun sales on state property.

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2025 — On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it will not take up a challenge to the state’s landmark law banning the purchase of firearms and ammunition on public property. The 2023 law was passed in large part thanks to years of advocacy by Brady California activists, including leadership by late Brady Board Member Ira Sharp.

"It’s simple: Our taxpayer dollars shouldn’t fund the spread of guns into our neighborhoods and communities. We were able to show that the more weapons on the streets, the more victims of gun violence. Our small coastal community fought for this state ban because we wanted a different future, one without unchecked gun proliferation. It's the same future most Americans want and frankly deserve,” said Rose Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgainCA and member of Brady’s National Leadership Council.

"The gun industry tried to make this case about free speech when it was really about safe streets. The Constitution allows for communities to protect themselves from gun violence. That fight isn't over yet, but wins like this will inspire millions of Americans to continue working for a safer future. I saw that happen in California. When our community stood up, others followed. Especially in this moment, we cannot underestimate the power of community activism. I wouldn't be surprised to see other states follow California's lead now," said Ruth Borenstein, Brady California Legislative & Policy Chair.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
